The wiring for the SWI-ECL2 is straight forward; I have five steering wheel buttons (vol. Up, up, mode, vol. Down and down). The harness for the steering wheel control buttons has three wires (Pin 26, Pin 27 and Pin 29).
2010 JSW TDI, 42,000 miles. The horn, MFD controls, and volume controls for radio started to go out intermittently over two days, and then went out completely. I checked the fuses and they are fine. Since the car is out of warranty, I don't want to have to take it to the dealership since they will most likely overcharge and tell me I have to change out a whole lot more than probably it probably needs to be fixed.Has anyone else had this problem and what has been the fix? Please help to point me in the right direction.
Is there a trusted TDI mechanic in your area that can take a look? Like NickBeek already stated, sounds to me like a bad connection in the steering wheel.Quick test: can you turn the wheel to different positions while trying various steering wheel controls? If you can get them to operate again with the wheel at a certain spot, then its most likely a broken or corroded contact somewhere in the wheel/column area.P.S. Check the fuses again. I had to track down a nasty electrical gremlin in my MB 300D once and it turned out that the fuses were fine but the contacts themselves had oxidized preventing good electrical contact.
Some emory paper and a few minutes solved what had been driving me nuts for months. I'm new to the TDI forum (and a relatively new TDI owner)- but I've just encountered the same problem with my 2009 Jetta TDI.
I started my car one day last week, and the horn and steering wheel controls (for the radio and the MFD) just didn't work. The other controls on the steering column (cruise control, blinkers, wipers) are all still functional, though.Did you all ever find the root of the problem? The radio controls are really just a convenience, but I'd definitely like to have the horn back!Also- I'm at 43k miles (so over the 36k warranty).
Can anyone recommend a good VW mechanic or shop in the northern Virginia area? Thanks! I wanted to follow-up with my last post in case anyone's interested. After about a week of no horn and no steering wheel controls, my airbag fault light also went on.
I bit the bullet and went to a local service center (VolksWerks in Falls Church, VA). The service manager and technicians were awesome and quickly diagnosed and fixed the problem: a damaged clockspring (they called it a 'spiral spring'). I had my car back by the end of the day.
Since I don't know much about cars, I decided to take the damaged clockspring home to examine a little more closely- sure enough, only 3 of the 8 pins make through connections. The service manager suggested I follow-up with VW. Though the car's out of warranty, he said the spring really should last quite a bit longer.
So I think I might just try that.

Wondering if anyone else has a similar problem and a solution. I have a 06 FX35 and the buttons on the left side of the steering wheel (specifically volume down, station down, and pick up telephone) dont work. All the other buttons work properly. First, it would only happen when the car was driven for 25+ miles or it was hot, but now they just dont work flat out.My car is out of warranty.and dealer wants to replace the whole steering wheel to get those buttons to work. Replacing the whole steering wheel is apparently $1500+ since it deals with the airbag also. When I asked them what it was, they said the wiring burns out back there under the buttons or there is a loose connection.
Any thoughts anyone?Considering the up volume works but down button doesnt, its kinda weird it would be a burned wire? Any input is appreciated.
